Henry E. Rohlsen Airport was full of excitement and smiles on Friday afternoon as the USVI Soccer Association’s boys and girls’ teams prepared to fly to the Dominican Republic to compete in an international Caribbean Football Union soccer tournament.
“We are very happy to be able to take part in an international tournament,” said Claudia Lombard, head coach of the girls’ team. “The girls ‘and boys’ teams really have very few opportunities to play with these other teams so having the opportunity to play against Aruba, Curacao, Turks and Caicos, St. Kitts and other islands is just amazing . The girls have hardly played any games, for them it is almost like a dream come true. “
The CFU 2020 Boys ‘and 2021 Girls’ U-14 Challenge Series will start on Sunday, August 22nd and will last until August 29th. The boys and girls of the USVI Soccer Association are two of 23 teams involved in the international soccer tournament.
“It is actually an opportunity to see the skills of young people in the Virgin Islands,” said the head coach of the boys’ team Felix St. Rose.
The boys’ team had planned to play in the 2020 tournament but were unable to participate due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Randolph Harris, President of the Caribbean Football Union, said, “We are very excited to present our development competitions this year. Football is returning to our region and our members want their youngsters to be back on the field. “
All the players gathered at the airport were excited to represent the Virgin Islands.
“This is a great opportunity to play against different football teams in the Caribbean,” said Jade Browne.
“I feel good about this tournament,” said Jaeden Joseph. “I think we will do well. I think it will be a nice experience and I hope we can return with great results. “
Other Caribbean teams that the boys and girls teams of the USVI Soccer Association will compete against are from Curacao, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, Aruba, Bonaire and Turks. and Caicos Islands.
