Six players represented Washington High School on the Eastern Carolina 2A All-Conference team that the coaches voted on.
Seniors Brandon Cox, Seth Davis and Bryan Martinez repeated their selections from 2019, while classmate Luis Ramirez, Junior Ridge Zerniak and second goalkeeper Rogelio Cano made it for the first time.
“Everyone worked extremely hard and deserved their recognition,” said coach Jim Kozuch. “This group battled COVID-19 restrictions, took the bus to most games and trained in terrible weather without complaining. The seniors have taken the time to have a successful season and will be difficult to replace. “
WHS finished the eighth title in a row 10-0 and ended 13-1 after losing in the third round in the playoffs.
Kozuch credited Cano for helping the team get deep into the playoffs while holding back.
“He did a great job in his first year at university,” said Kozuch. “The only goals he gave up in conference play were Greene Central (four in ten games in total). “He’s great at keeping shots down, and he can stand up to distract them or catch them in the air. He’s got a goddamned foot too. It’s a plus when your goalie can kick the ball deep. “
The coaches named Greene Central’s Ariel Nunez Player of the Year but did not vote to be named Coach of the Year.
