RAHWAY, NJ – While a lot of our sports news has been revolving around high school teams lately, it’s important to remember that these aren’t the only sports teams in town. There are a variety of recreational, travel, and other youth sports programs available in Rahway which, in fact, form the foundation for the higher quality programs that receive the most recognition. It is simply a fact that young athletes are getting older and that without robust and dedicated youth programs, no city can expect to produce competitive middle and high school teams.

A recreational sports program that has existed since 1970 is the Rahway Youth Soccer Association (RYSA). Currently under the direction of President Robert Macaluso and Vice President James Wysocki, RYSA has been providing high quality organized soccer teams, programs and tournaments for 50 years. Joanna Macaluso, the city coordinator of RYSA, reached out to TAPinto Rahway with some very good news that she asked us to share with the community.

The Rahway Raiders are an U13 (under 13 years old) boys travel team that is part of the RYSA program. Yesterday, Saturday, June 5th, the boys won the New Jersey Youth Soccer Challenge Cup. On their way to the final, in which they defeated the Deptford Premier Boys 4-1 in 2008, they played four more games in the tournament. On average, the team scored almost five goals per game over the course of the event. They scored a total of 23 goals in the five games while allowing only three. The team is coached by head coach Robert Macaluso and assistant coach Sean White.
