ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) – Paraguay’s second division footballers are working as gardeners, builders and egg sellers to help survive during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of them have not been paid by their clubs in over a year. Paraguay’s last season of the second division ended on November 17, 2019, but the country’s championship was the first to begin just months after the pandemic broke out in South America. Paraguayan football executives believe the 2021 second division season will begin April 9, once the country’s health ministry and local football authority sign a contract on a COVID-19 protocol for three lower divisions and the country’s women’s football championship .
