Hammond, La. – After two losses last weekend, Dalton Fish and Nadine Maher both received the “Southland Conference Players of the Week” award for the women’s soccer team in southeast Louisiana, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The duo helped the Lady Lions (3-2-3 Southland) battle two goalless ties at UIW on Friday and Abilene Christian on Sunday. The SLU defense, led by Fish and Maher, suffered 40 shots in the two games but refused to break.
Fish, a junior, played every 220 minutes over the weekend to be named Defensive Player of the Week. The Texas native Pflugerville led the SLU backline, which blocked 14 shots against ACU on Saturday. Fish is a Hendrickson High grade and has shown remarkable durability in 806 of the 826 minutes the Lady Lions played throughout the season.
“Dalton’s defensive skills have been a huge advantage this year,” said Chris McBride, SLU football head coach for the fourth year. “When she got back to the first game of the season she had some really important tackles when the game was at stake. Fish, Maher, and the Lady Lions return to the field on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they receive Houston Baptist to start a three-game homestand to wrap up the regular season.
