FRANKFURT – Borussia Dortmund was fined 75,000 euros for violating the social distancing rules of German football after the players celebrated a victory against a fierce rival in the team bus.
Videos published on social media after the 4-0 win against Schalke on Saturday showed players celebrating together as the bus drove past a crowd of Dortmund fans cheering on the street. The club estimated that 150 to 200 fans greeted the bus near the Dortmund training center when the team returned from the game.
The league said on Monday that Dortmund was fined because “the players celebrated the victory in the derby in the team bus without distancing themselves and without mouth and nose”.
Dortmund said it accepted the fine. The club apologized for the festivities on Sunday and said they would speak “to the police and everyone involved” about how best to prevent similar scenes in the future.
Dortmund and Schalke have had a longstanding rivalry. The victory for Dortmund also meant a turnaround after a win from the last six league games. Dortmund is sixth in the Bundesliga.
